Issues Facing Our School Board
Because the School Board of Trustees is charged with taking actions which “promote the welfare of school children” in the district, there are many complicated issues which face the school board of trustees. Some of the more important in our community are addressed below:
Student Achievement
Educational reform, in the interest of increased student achievement, has long been a topic of debate in our country. But improving achievement of all students does not require complicated and expensive reform programs. If our main goal is to provide students with the best opportunities in education, a focus on a few simple and inexpensive things will prove most successful. First, we need to support the excellent teachers already within our district by giving them the tools they need. This support must come from the Board, the Administration, and from individual families. Second, we must communicate with each other about problems, concerns and goals, without pointing fingers or casting negative accusations. We are all working toward the same goal. Third, we should focus on the family, as the single greatest resource in promoting student achievement.
Budget and Financial
While none of us can control all of the factors which increase or decrease the district budget, we can make good decisions about how to use the funds already available. We know that as individuals and families we are sometimes faced with budgeting concerns and periods of financial stress. Just like our families the district will have times of financial discomfort, but if we keep our focus on the most important priorities no student will lose the chance for success.
Communication with Parents and the Community
Implied within the School Board’s duties, is a responsibility to communicate with parents and the community about the educational needs of our children. Some in our community harbor a great deal of frustration with the school district. With better communication, we can gather on common ground and work to lift our children to greater acievement and a strong educational foundation.
